Thumbs up to Southern Methodist University for moving its home football games back “home” to Ownby Stadium. The Mustangs played their last game at Ownby in 1948. after which they moved to the Cotton Bowl, and finally to Texas Stadium, where it was difficult to tell the team from a professional football farm team. Returning to a refurbished, 23,613-seat Ownby Stadium and the SMU campus will bring the team back to playing for fun instead of for funds. The whole point of college football is (or should be) to enhance school spirit and a sense of community. Perhaps this move will emphasize the fact that the football team has been brought back under the control of the school and away from the control of overzealous alumni. Welcome back, Mustangs.
