LADIES DAY LEFTOVERS

|

I’m sure there are plenty of FrontBurnervians–not the least of which is the so-called Frustrated FrontBurnervian who will most likely make a miraculous recovery from his self-inflicted gunshot and stabbing wounds–who are happy that the boys will be back on the blog today. But I think I speak for all of the girls when I say we had a blast. So thank you, Dallas!

Now, back to the leftovers. I got many e-mails last night from men commenting about the gift-giving discussion, including this one:

Why do we all decry materialism and then measure our affection for each other in monetary terms alone? What about creative gifts? I write my wife a poem each Christmas–not great art, but filled with memories, pictures of the last year. This year we gave each other a single book and adopted a refugee family. It felt great. Do I really need anything material to know my wife’s affection for me? Doesn’t the fact that we mutually do something for others do that better? Well for us it does. We’ve purchased lots of expensive gifts for each other over the 21 years of marriage, none of those express love better than the creative things we’ve done.
