THIS POKER STUFF IS EASY

|

Last night, D put on a poker tournament at Medici. Last night, I played Texas Hold ‘Em for the first time.

And I won big.

The tournament was free to enter, the chips weren’t our money, but I nonetheless got in on a game where an iPod Shuffle was the prize. To my right at the table was Glenn Mitchell of “The Glenn Mitchell Show” fame. To my left was Dan Michalski, a sometime-published writer and full-time poker blogger.

I’ll be honest: I got lucky. I won one hand with a pair of threes. Even luckier: some of the guys at the table worried about getting home late and bet big just to lose quickly. I won all those hands. I won even after the alcohol clouded my better judgment. Then won some more.

Soon, only Dan the Poker Man and I were left. I had about six piles of chips. Dan had two. The dealer threw a king and, I think, a 10 my way–I don’t remember the suits, and, to be honest, didn’t think at the time I needed to. Again, first time with poker, people.

Dan went all in. I matched him. I flipped over my cards and Dan said to me, “You don’t even know you just won, do you?” I tried to play it cool, extending my hand and saying “Good game.”

But, honestly, I didn’t know.

The iPod’s cool, though.
