What I’m Watching: Opening Day

Plus: the NBA regular season winds down and the Stars face a stiff test in the American Airlines Center

The Stars won three games out of four to (mostly) ace their West Coast road swing, but the Mavs weren’t so lucky in their reunion with old pal Kristaps Porzingis. Meanwhile, Dallas spent four days as the mecca of professional wrestling, culminating in a two-night WrestleMania at AT&T Stadium, where UNT’s own Stone Cold Steve Austin wrestled one last match.

Here’s what I’m watching.

Thursday, 4/7: Stars versus Maple Leafs7:30 p.m., Bally Sports Southwest

Sunday’s 4-1 debacle in Seattle notwithstanding, the Stars took care of business on the road against admittedly weak competition. Let’s see how they fare at home against in a much stiffer test versus Toronto, who boast the fourth-most points in the Eastern Conference as well as two of the league’s elite scorers in Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner.

Friday, 4/8: Rangers at Blue Jays6:07 p.m., Bally Sports Southwest

After a slight delay and more than a few labor hiccups, Rangers baseball is back. Free-agent import Jon Gray gets the Opening Day nod, while the high-priced middle infield of Marcus Semien and Corey Seager should each be at the plate in the top of the first in Toronto. We’ll have plenty of Rangers pieces coming through this week.

Sunday, 4/10: Mavericks versus SpursTBD

The final game of the NBA regular season could have implications for each of the longtime Southwest division foes, with Dallas jostling for the third seed in the West as San Antonio scrambles to stay above the Lakers for the last play-in spot. Those goals will intersect quite a bit this week, as Golden State, currently in third place, takes on Los Angeles and San Antonio on Thursday and Saturday. The ideal scenario for both Texas teams is Dallas running the table while Golden State beats L.A. but loses to San Antonio: Dallas goes up to No. 3, San Antonio clinches their play-in game slot, and the Lakers go home for the summer.

It's been 26 years since a defending World Series champion leaned on this many young players out of the gate. In Texas' case, that wasn't the plan. But that doesn't make an influx of former first-round picks a bad thing, either.
