For $195,000, Neiman Marcus will ship you its 1996 His and Hers Christmas gift: a sleek, silver-bullet-designed Airstream trailer with a customized interior by Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs. But for $54,000 to $88,000, Overseas Motors will hitch your Airstream to the ultimate North Dallas sport-utility vehicle: the Hummer.
In the crowded realm of sport-utility vehicles, the Hummer is a genuine four-by-four chunk of rugged American individualism. It doesn’t give a damn about sexy, sloping curves, goose-egg design symphonies, integrated headlights or convenient grocery-bag nooks. It’s big, boxy and looks meaner than Leona Helmsley carrying out a court-ordered act of kindness. With its sealed drivetrain ventilation system, the Hummer could, in theory, haul your MacKenzie-Childs fashion statement across an undredged White Rock Lake with barely a hiccup. Now that’s an appropriate contrast to NM’s accoutrefied designer billet.
