ABIMF Identifies 90 New Unnecessary Tests and Procedures

|

The American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation added 90 tests and procedures to its Choosing Wisely campaign that identifies tests and procedures it considers unnecessary or harmful. Many of the identified tests and procedures involve the use of antibiotics and imaging.

A few of the recommendations added to the list of more than 130 tests and procedures include: “waiting six weeks to do imaging for low back pain, unless red flags are present; avoiding elective, nonmedically indicated inductions of labor between 39 weeks and 41 weeks; steering clear of ordering antibiotics for adenoviral conjunctivitis; and not ordering continuous telemetry monitoring outside of the ICU without using a protocol that governs continuation,” according to Modern Healthcare.
