Access to Recreational Facilities

Recreational facilities are establishments operating fitness and recreational sports facilities, featuring exercise and other active physical fitness conditioning, or recreational sports activities such as swimming, skating, or racquet sports, according to County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.

A collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute, the program ranks various health factors for nearly every county in the nation. It says the availability of recreational facilities can influence physical activity. That’s because proximity to places with recreational opportunities is associated with higher physical activity levels, which in turn is associated with lower rates of adverse health outcomes associated with poor diet, lack of physical activity, and obesity.

Collin County has 10 facilities for every 100,000, Dallas County matches the state rate of 7, while Tarrant and Denton counties are slightly higher at 8 per 100,000.
