Amid some of the odder new marketing that the Dallas Symphony has introduced this season, The Maestro’s Choice, a new series of videos hosted by musical director Jaap van Zweden, is a welcomed and on point effort to grow interest in the musical organization. In the pieces, the Dutch conductor acts as tour guide for the music the symphony will be performing, offering insightful and characteristically impassioned commentary.

This week, van Zweden speaks about the DSO’s landmark commission of composer Conrad Tao new work, The World Is Very Different Now, which was written in memory of John F. Kennedy and will be performed by superstar violinist Joshua Bell. He also adds some thoughts on the assassination and Dallas, “a great city,” he says, “that has tried in its own way to live with this tragedy.” Watch it below:
