Director James Wan proves with Insidious: Chapter 2, the sequel to his 2010 original, that he’s never met an uninspired genre trope that he won’t employ. Let’s play a good, old-fashioned game of Horror Movie Bingo to see how close he came to making this film a perfectly prepackaged fright fest.

That’s a tough break for the continuing story of the Lambert family, who are forced to contend with the evil spirits out to kill them because of their own accursed psychic powers. If only Wan had swapped out the movie’s plodding storyline for legitimately scary moments — or some guts (be they literal or figurative) — he might have had a shot.
