“INTIMATE ECONOMIES” by Margarita Cabrera, at the Latino Cultural Center – March 15: 6-8 p.m. 2600 Live Oak, Dallas, Tx 75204.

El Paso-dwelling Magarita Cabrera calls herself a border girl. Cabrera moved from Monterrey, Mexico to El Paso when she was ten, and much of her work is bound-up with unpacking this cross-cultural existence. Thus we get objects signifying work – tractors, hammers, pick axes, etc. – as well as those culled from immigrant experience (dessert plants), all made with soft or fragile materials like vinyl, fabrics, and clay. Cabrera has also staged work-performances which incorporate artisans, workers, or members of her audience, such as Pulso y Martillo, in which a group consisting mostly of immigrant students swing sledge hammers at copper plates laid out on a table in the gallery space. The through line is the friction of exchange, whether she is realizing absurd sculpture that emphasizes a disconnect between form and material, or utilizing sound and participation to frustrate conceptions of utility and labor.

1814 Magazine Pop Up Gallery—March 15: 6 p.m. 2650 Main St. Dallas, TX 75226.

If this exhibition is any bit as pretty as the rarefied magazine that is hosting it, then you’ll want to check it out. For more on the show and mag, head here.
