Adolescents and young adults in the Dallas area are struggling with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The latest statistics from Mental Health America (MHA) show that 13 percent of teens in Texas suffer from depression, 9 percent suffer from severe depression, and 16 percent of the state’s adults have a mental health condition.

A new study published in the Journal of Adolescence illuminates one of the biggest obstacles to well-being for teens and Generation Z: loneliness, which has gotten worse due to the pandemic. The researchers point to the smartphone as a potential cause; as online interaction replaces in-person relationships, the resulting sense of isolation is catalyzing mental health issues. Yet it’s harder for young people to access treatment in Texas than in almost any other state.

Newport Healthcare, the leading provider of teen and young adult mental healthcare, is addressing this need with a new outpatient location in Dallas, through its teen program, Newport Academy, and its young adult program, Newport Institute.

In Newport’s outpatient programs, young people can overcome isolation within a supportive, caring community of peers and mentors. Clients receive a tailored treatment plan incorporating individual and group therapy, clinical and experiential modalities, and strengths-based academic and life skills programming. Families also receive support.
