Whether you’re a wannabe reiner or a recreational rider, don’t saddle up without the right Western gear.

BOOTS
PRICE: $650 and up

Andreas Beckmann owner Hector Alfaro can customize a pair of boots with initials, dates, or even tattoos worked into the design. Choose from 28 types of leather (alligator’s particularly popular), then select the hue (any color of the rainbow), toe style (ranging from round to extra pointy), boot height (12 to 16 inches), as well as the height and slope of the heel. In six to eight weeks, you’ll have boots you’ll be proud to kick your feet up in. (4212 Oak Lawn Ave., 214-520-3415, www.andreasbeckmann.net)

CUSTOM REINING SADDLE
PRICE: $3,695 AND UP

Though not the most comfortable to ride in, reining saddles are functional and often flashy. The deep seat is designed to hold the rider in place, while the shape enables the horse’s shoulders to move easily underneath. Polished silver accents are added to give the final product aesthetic flare. For a quality custom saddle, look to the craftsmen at M.L. Leddy’s in Fort Worth, open since 1922. Even President Bush has called on them to design saddles that he gives as gifts—including one he presented to Prince Charles. (2455 N. Main St., Fort Worth, 817-624-3149, www.leddys.com)

STETSON 30X EL PATRON HAT
PRICE: $549.99

The Stetson name is synonymous with quality hats in the world of Western wear, and the El Patron fur cowboy hat is no exception. Top-of-the-line 30X fur felt gives this hat a beautiful look and feel, along with guaranteed durability. The four-inch brim and four-and-five-eighths-inch cattleman crease crown are adorned with a three-piece silver buckle set with gold-filled overlay and ruby stone embellishments. Available at Sheplers. (2500 E. Centennial Dr., Arlington, 817-640-5055, www.sheplers.com)

BRIDLE
PRICE: $150-$1,000
A bridle is made up of four parts: a headstall, bit, curb chain, and reins. Rein thickness is a matter of comfort for the rider, whereas bits are selected according to a horse’s preference. Headstalls come in sliding ear, browband, and split-ear styles. Renowned Western shop Luskey’s/Ryon’s offers custom bridle work in addition to standard styles. (2601 N. Main St., Fort Worth, 817-625-2391, www.luskeys.com)

BEAUMONT RANCH HORSEBACK TRAILRIDES
PRICE: $35 PER PERSON PER HOUR

If you’re an inexperienced rider—or merely interested in a relaxing day of easy trail-riding—check out the Beaumont Ranch, located just half an hour outside of Dallas. Do like the Wild West cowboys of ol’ once did and ride the historic Chisholm Trail, which runs directly through the property. (Unlike the cowboys, though, you can enjoy a meal or spa services on the ranch facilities afterwards.) Call ahead to reserve a trail time. (10736 County Rd. 102, Grandview, 888-864-6935, www.beaumontranch.com)
