You’d think that the Jakes Old Fashioned Hamburgers in Uptown was the only game in town, as busy as it is during weekday lunches. Men in ties, SMU co-eds, and moms on the run sit shoulder-to-shoulder inside—or under misters on the outdoor patio when it’s warm—to get their hands on some good, cheap grub, served by some of the cheeriest staff around. Our favorite is the simple cheeseburger, made with two thin patties of beef, two slices of melted American cheese, and your favorite fixings, wedged in between a soft, poppy seed bun. A side of onion rings or crispy tater tots completes the heart-stopping experience. 2702 McKinney Ave. 214-754-8001; 6606 Skillman St. 214-349-1422. —Jennifer Chininis
