The arrival of Kuai Dumplings & Soups brings Dallas up to speed on one of the latest food trends that has spread from New York to Houston to the West Coast: the fast-food Chinese dumpling joint. Instead of a burger or wrap, you make a meal out of 10 steamed dumplings filled with chicken, pork, or vegetable, and your choice of sauce, be it ginger soy or wasabi teriyaki, all for $6. Kuai also does soup and basic appetizers such as edamame and a Vietnamese summer roll. But the goal is to keep it simple. Spying Dallas’ dumpling shortage, a trio of young entrepreneurial pals from UT opened this first branch in the underground tunnel in the Republic Center Building downtown (accessible via the street entrance at 1700 Pacific), where throngs of office drones make a built-in market for a cheap, quick lunch. Thus, Kuai (meaning “quick”) is open weekday lunches only. But look for more branches this year.
