Leading Off (9/12/16)

Cowboys are still the Cowboys, another twist in the murder of UP fire captain, who's in the running for Dallas County DA, and more.

Cowboys Lose Opener In Super Cowboys Fashion. When they went up 19-13 on a Dan Bailey field goal, I instinctively knew what the final score would be: Giants 20, Cowboys 19. (Note: when Bailey is as good as he was on Sunday, it’s always going down like this.) It was a microcosm of pretty much every Cowboys game since last year at this time — mostly, settling for field goals, beating themselves, and giving fans just enough hope to ultimately let them down. I’m glad I only truly invest myself in the Mavs, FC Dallas, Everton, and trying to outsmart Dallas Parking Enforcement.

Second Arrest in Murder of University Park Fire Captain. Crazy story. Michael Garza was apprehended a day after Chacey Poynter — the wife of Bob Poynter, an 18-year vet of the University Park fired department found dead on Friday night from a single gunshot wound — was arrested.

Wings Win, But Miss Playoffs. Dallas’ (or Arlington’s) new WNBA franchise won its final home game (leaving them 11-21) but a win by Phoenix ended their very tiny playoff hopes. Not going to go into too much detail, since Tim will probably have more on this later.

Bill Wirskye Withdraws Name From Consideration for Dallas County DA. Wirskye was Susan Hawks original first assistant, before being controversially fired. Still planning to apply: current first assistant and de facto DA Messina Madson, Jennifer Balido, Danny Clancy, and Faith Johnson.

FC Dallas’ 19-Game Home Unbeaten Streak Ends. FCD fell to Colorado 1-0 on Saturday night, marking its first home loss of the season. BUT they have a chance to quickly make up for it, when they host the U.S. Open Cup final on Tuesday night.
