The Localist: Sweet and Spicy Tomato Jam by In a Pickle

One big downfall to summer bounty is it doesn’t last very long. Most of these vibrant and aromatic foods hit the marketplace virtually overnight and are gone in a blink of an eye. Thankfully, we have some great businesses nearby to help preserve the best of the season so we can enjoy it year round.

From okra to peaches, I have been fortunate enough to consume some fantastic food this summer season. I’m spending my free weekends visiting as many different markets as I possibly can, purchasing some incredible peaches and Asian pears, burgundy okra, and fresh tomatoes.

One big downfall to summer bounty is it doesn’t last very long. Most of these vibrant and aromatic foods hit the marketplace virtually overnight and are gone in a blink of an eye. I wish I had more free time to pickle and preserve these foods for winter consumption, but I feel fortunate that we have some great businesses nearby to help preserve the best of the season so we can enjoy it year round.

In a Pickle Foods, located in Fort Worth, is one of those businesses. Owner Karen Felps has been making pickles and jams as gifts for family and friends for years. Once demand for her produce outpaced supply, they turned their devoted following into a full-time business. While they’ve garnered great praise for their line of pickles, I’ve really taken a liking to their small batch jams.

I adore their sweet and spicy tomato jam. The jam is more sweet than spicy. I love the clean tomato flavor and slightly spicy finish on just about everything I spread it across. It’s become my condiment of choice for savory egg and bacon breakfast sandwiches, English muffins, and I’ve even added it to vinaigrettes for a summer tomato and goat cheese salad.

In a Pickle’s complete line of pickles and jams can be found at various specialty food stores throughout Texas. You can learn more about them by visiting their website at http://inapicklefoods.com/.
