It saddens me to say that you cannot see a live rendition of Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me tonight. Peter Sagall and Carl Kasell have done the nigh-impossible and completely sold out the Winspear Opera House.
You can, however, eat and drink well at Bolsa Mercado, where they’re hosting a wine dinner with selections from Red Caboose Winery, a Texas joint out in Meridian that was just named one of the hottest brands of 2012 by Wine Business Monthly. The wines will be paired appropriately with executive chef Jeff Harris’ dishes, which include foie gras and peanut butter terrine, braised and roasted cabrito with parsnip, mushrooms, tamarillo, and peppers, and cheesecake with a port reduction.
If any of that sounds good to you, I was told there are still reservations available. The meal and wines will set you back $75, and tax and gratuity are extra. The bright side is that you’ll leave full and happy, and possibly with new friends. These “Meet and Eat” dinners are usually at the community table, which nicely facilitates chatting among strangers.
Across the street from Peter and Carl, as I like to refer to them, Uptown Players and the Turtle Creek Chorale put on a concert presentation of the beloved musical Ragtime at Dallas City Performance Hall. For those less familiar, the story is based on a book by E.L. Doctorow, and represents a cross-section of American life at the turn of the century. Historical figures such as Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, and J.P. Morgan make an appearance. It’s a cool collaboration between two arts groups, and another chance to check out the new Arts District venue. Plus, never have I heard these Tony-winning songs performed with so many voices. They number 150, total, and the performances will last through the weekend.
