The burden of proof in a civil trial is “a preponderance of the evidence,” whereas in a criminal trial it’s “beyond a reasonable doubt” — a significantly higher standard. (That’s why OJ could be acquitted of murdering Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman in the criminal trial but be found guilty of murdering them in the civil trial.)
