According to the Texas Employment Commission’s unemployment statistics, Dallas construction workers were the ones nailed hardest by job loss during 1987. In November 1986, there were 74,100 construction jobs in the Dallas metropolitan area. By November 1987, the number of construction jobs had dropped to 58,900. Jobs also vanished in the retail trade-particularly influenced by losses incurred in mergers. Banking and real estate jobs were also down. On the positive side, out of the twenty-seven metropolitan areas in Texas, Dallas’s unemployment rate for 1987 was consistently between the fourth and sixth lowest in the state.
