The June 27 NBA draft, which brought 6-foot-7-inch. 256-pound Randy White to Dallas, was a hard one to call. How hard? The NBA beat writers for both daily papers wrote pre-draft predictions on how the draft would unfold. Martin McNeal of the Dallas Times Herald led the prognosticating derby by correctly matching eight of the twenty-seven players selected to the team that took them. That’s a shade under 30 percent. David Moore of The Dallas Morning News was correct on six (22 percent). But before you snicker consider that the Times Herald also polled beat writers from every NBA city, asking them which player they thought their home team would pick. Only four were correct.
