What I’m Watching: The Rangers and the Trade Deadline

Plus: the U.S. Women's National Team seeks to avoid elimination at the Women's World Cup.

Rangers general manager Chris Young had a busy weekend, and his work might not be done. Kiyoshi Mio, USA Today Sports.

The Cowboys are back in Oxnard sans Zack Martin (our Jake Kemp wrote about his absence), while the Wings’ winning streak was snapped by the Connecticut Sun (go read Dorothy J. Gentry on Irving native Odyssey Sims’ journey home if you want a pick-me-up). As for the Rangers, they lost two of three against the rival Astros before getting swept by San Diego.

Let’s see if this week brings better tidings. Here’s what I’m watching:

Tuesday, 8/1—Women’s World Cup: USA versus Portugal2 a.m., FOX Sports 1

OK, cards on the table: I am not actually waking up in the middle of the night to see this. I may be a professional sports degenerate for this website, but I also have a lot of work to do in said job during normal business hours.

I will, however, be checking the score when I wake up with bated breath, because the USWNT needs at least a draw to avoid being eliminated in the group stage for the first time in World Cup history. (Technically, the Americans might be fine if Vietnam defeats the Netherlands by a small enough margin to let the U.S. retain a better overall advantage in goal differential, but still, best not to leave that to chance.)

Will the USWNT pull this off? Probably, yes; there’s a reason the team is aiming for a third straight World Cup victory. But strange things can happen in one-off matches.

Tuesday, 8/1—The MLB Trade Deadline5 p.m., The Internet

What’s a contender to do when it’s lost five of six and seen its division lead dwindle to a single game? Go out and buy, of course. And so the Rangers have, shipping out three of their top 15 pitchers to acquire future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer from the Mets along with the rental duo of starer Jordan Montgomery and reliever Chris Stratton from the Cardinals. Are more moves to come? We’ll know by happy hour tomorrow. We’ll have more this week from Jamey Newberg and ex-Nationals fan/Scherzer devotee Brian Reinhart this week.

What Should We Make of the Rangers’ Accidental Youth Movement?

It's been 26 years since a defending World Series champion leaned on this many young players out of the gate. In Texas' case, that wasn't the plan. But that doesn't make an influx of former first-round picks a bad thing, either.
