Wellness is a major buzzword these days, but it can mean a little something different to everyone. Does it stand for self-care and restoration, or is it more about strength and endurance? So, we created a series breaking down the healthy habits of local influencers and entrepreneurs, allowing them to define what wellness means on a personal level.

Troy Aikman, three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and FOX’s longtime broadcasting voice, has always had his head in the game when it comes to health and fitness pursuits. From when he was first pick in the 1989 NFL Draft from UCLA, to present day running on the Katy Trail in Dallas.

In between sessions of his NFL commentating gig on FOX, Aikman dishes to D Magazine how he keeps his mental and physical health in tip-top shape—and how dedication is the centerpoint for maintaining it all.

“Whether on the field, in the broadcast booth, or at points in between, my successes haven’t been because I was the most talented guy,” Aikman says.  “They’re a result of hard work.”

How do you start your day on a healthy note?

My morning starts with 20 to 30 minutes of meditation. I think it’s critical to begin the day centered and present. I also drink Athletic Greens and take Vitamin D in the morning to ensure I get my important daily nutrients.

Favorite workout right now? We know you love Katy Trail runs.

I do cardio five to six days a week, and aside from running (and yes, Katy Trail is definitely my favorite), a lot of that is on my Peloton bike.  I also work out at Barry’s Bootcamp from time to time, but to be honest, I enjoy the solitude of working out at home where the only judgement is from the guy in the mirror.

What’s the hardest workout you’ve ever done?

Probably the most exhausting thing I do is my annual stress test at Cooper Clinic with Dr. Kenneth Cooper where he has you go until complete and total exhaustion. I can’t think of any other workout that I’ve done where you go until you simply can’t go any further.

What’s one thing that’s made a big difference in your wellness pursuits?

I drink at least one gallon of water every day. I began doing it about three years ago and I would say that has probably been the most impactful single thing I’ve ever done for my health. The health benefits of being properly hydrated are numerous.

How do you end your day on a healthy note?

Every night I try to read something that inspires me, and I’m pretty strict about getting seven hours or more of sleep, so I don’t stay up too late. However, nothing caps off a great day like time with my girls or catching up with a good friend over a beer.
