Hot Property: A Midcentury Gem Near White Rock Lake

Fellow fans of old-school architecture, I’ve recently discovered a website you’ll appreciate. On midcenturymoderndallashomes.com, a local realtor showcases the cutest 1950s homes in town. The first to catch my eye was 6744 Patrick Drive, a four-bedroom abode just a few blocks from the shores of White Rock Lake. Its exterior is a retro dream; there’s whitewashed brick, wood paneling, angular roofing, and a turquoise door to boot.

The home is clearly well cared for. Check out the contemporary landscaping and fresh paint–but the façade probably hasn’t changed significantly since its completion in 1955. Its interior, however, has been given a subtle, clean-lined facelift: white walls, warm wood floors, recessed lighting, and simple trim on windows and doors. The kitchen embraces a cooler palette, with neutral wallpaper, dove gray cabinets, and chrome accents. Columns of built-in shelves can display dishes or trinkets, while a tiny bar nook is on hand to store glassware. In the living room, a wall of windows frames the foliage outside and a sunburst chandelier is a stylish statement piece that nods to the home’s age.

Downstairs, a sizable media room doubles as a playroom or homeschool area. Upstairs, the four bedrooms have treetop views, modern bathrooms, and pretty details like gold sconces and sculptural ceiling fans.

This home’s biggest selling point may be its backyard. It’s not one you find often in Dallas: the ground softly slopes from the outdoor living area to the verdant lawn, which is shaded by gnarled trees. A creek snakes its way along the property line; its burbling sounds, matched by singing birds and chirping crickets, create a year-round summery feel.
