This week’s flashback comes from a cover story in the October 1982 issue of D Magazine titled “The Unauthorized State Fair History.” The piece features an enlightening one-page story about the origins of Fletcher’s Corny Dogs.

Things I learned from reading the story:

  • The dogs (never referred to as “wieners”) were developed in 1942, and were selling for 15 cents each that year.
  • The batter for the dogs took nine years to perfect.
  • The dogs were selling for $1 each in 1982.
  • As of 1982, Neil Odrey Fletcher estimated that his company had sold 14 million corn dogs.
