With talk about a wall and sanctuary cities and renegotiating NAFTA, there’s no getting around the fact that these are, well, complicated times for the relationship between the U.S. and Texas and our neighbors to the south. But that’s also what made things interesting and compelling at the Adolphus Hotel last night, when D CEO hosted an event to celebrate our September cover story about some of Dallas-Fort Worth’s top Latino leaders.
Because, the thing is, those we honored—from the Dallas Museum of Art’s Agustin Arteaga and Luisa del Rosal of the Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center at SMU to Francisco de la Torre Galindo, the consul general of Mexico in Dallas—aren’t just contributing to the North Texas economy. They’re also working actively to bridge the gaps between nations and cultures.
Attorney Angel Reyes, for example, has aimed for years to give Hispanics greater access to the U.S. justice system. Dr. Octavio Diaz, chief medical officer at Tenet Healthcare, is emulating the example his Cuban grandfather set in connecting personally with patients and their communities. And del Rosal is trying hard to improve relations between Texas and Mexico through research and dialogue.
De La Torre Galindo, the Mexican consul general, put it like this in D CEO: “My job is to build bridges among the business communities. … We’re not only partners and allies with the United States, we’re roomies. What we do together makes a more competitive region of North America.” Please see more about each winner of our 2017 Latino Business Awards in our September cover story, right here.
