Michael J. Mooney hates himself.

I know this because he told me. Why? Director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) is attached to direct the movie version of The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, a recently published book by New York Times writer Anand Giridharadas. It’s the book Mooney didn’t write about Rais Bhuiyan. In the week after 9/11, a man named Mark Stroman went on a killing spree and shot Bhuiyan, who had only recently moved to Dallas, in the face. Bhuiyan forgave him, and even tried to save his life. In October 2011, Mooney wrote a feature for us, posing the question: Could you forgive the man who shot you in the face?

Read Mooney’s story. Then read Mike Sager’s December 2011 Esquire piece, naming Bhuiyan one of the magazine’s Americans of the Year. And okay, read the book too.
