Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Mar. 27

3-27-BIG-Event-Flyer-1Today’s the day that Dallas gets a fancy new slogan. But honestly, right now I’m fixated on Raya and her fancy new dress. It’s a match made in heaven.

Back to order. In order to celebrate this rebranding initiative, which apparently includes this hilarious idea to refer to the very northern area around the Galleria as “Midtown,” Visit Dallas is throwing a nice big party for the folks who live in this big city where big things are happening.  Have I said the word “big” enough? It kinda just makes me want to watch the Tom Hanks movie. But should you go hang out in Victory Plaza (words that aren’t spoken too often) somewhere between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.,  you’ll find the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, Mayor Mike, DJs, and all sorts of fun-making things such as food and drink, bounce houses, and putting greens. Also, you could win “Dallas swag.” I do kinda want a koozie. You can never have too many of those. This whole deal is free.

Also this evening, the Texas Theatre hosts the second of a special two-night screening of the documentary Burn, which chronicles a year in the life of Detroit firefighters. The producers are releasing it themselves, a costly venture, and a portion of proceeds goes to purchase much-needed gear for these guys. You can still get tickets online, so I recommend that and, yes, dinner and drinks at Mesa. Because it’s just the best. But for a little variety, there’s El Ranchito, which Todd Johnson just revisited for the May issue of D. The cabrito is still fantastic.
