Last month, D Magazine was a big winner in the City and Regional Magazine Association’s annual awards program. This past weekend, the company’s business title also brought home the gold.

D CEO was honored with seven awards in the Alliance of Area Business Publication’s 2022 Editorial Excellence Awards—including Best Magazine. Judged by faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, the program is considered the Oscars of the regional business publication industry.

“This magazine delivers a beautifully constructed package that is instantly recognizable and packed with content that truly speaks to the Dallas business community,” the judges wrote about their decision to award D CEO the top prize. “Features display a deftness for design and layered editorial, while profiles of educators, influencers, football entrepreneurs, and more introduce readers to the people behind thriving endeavors.”

The magazine’s annual Dallas 500 won gold in the Best Ancillary Publication category. “The design is elegant, the writing is personal and thoughtfully constructed, and the images are dazzling,” the judges wrote.

A profile of Paul Quinn College’s Michael Sorrell by Zac Crain earned the publication gold in the Best Profile category. In a feature that “reads like a short book,” the judges wrote, the writer “introduces us to the man, not just the leader. We get a true sense of what makes this college president and multidimensional visionary.”

D CEO’s creative director, Hamilton Hedrick, swept the design categories, winning gold in Best Cover (Amber Venz Box, June/July), Best Use of Photography/Illustrations, Best Feature Layout, and Best Overall Design. The judges lauded the magazine’s “stunning portraits” that “set the tone of this extremely well-designed publication.” They added: “The visual hierarchy on each page is flawless, and the extreme attention to detail is obvious. The use and application of sophisticated typography and dynamic grid systems coupled with intelligent and conceptual design all contribute to the visual success.”

The Editorial Excellence Awards capped the AABP’s 2022 summer conference in Columbus, Ohio. It featured an opening keynote on the future of business journalism by Quinnipiac University School of Communications Dean Chris Roush, and “From Harvey Weinstein to January 6: Journalism Under Attack,” a presentation by NewsNation’s Rich McHugh, who spent more than a year working with Ronan Farrow on the investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual assault.

The Alliance of Area Business Publishers represents more than 70 regional and local business publications in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Together, they reach more than 1.2 million business professionals.
