Dallas nonprofit Promise of Peace Gardens has been awarded the 2019 John P. McGovern Champion of Health Award by the Texas Medical Association Foundation. Promise of Peace promotes gardening, nutrition, and giving in Dallas’ food deserts.
The group earned the award for its Soup It Forward program, where it provides monthly ingredients and recipes for soups for 15o families. Families in the program help tend the gardens, learning how to grow food and engage in their community. They take home a sack of nutritional vegetables to prepare and share with their neighbors. The garden benefits 600 people annually, and includes cooking classes and children’s programs.
“To be recognized by and awarded the Champion of Health Award by the Texas Medical Association Foundation is truly a remarkable honor that adds value and action to our vision of a healthier Texas,” said Promise of Peace Founding Director Elizabeth Dry via release. “Let this be the beginning to get Soup It Forward programs across the state!”
“The staff behind Soup It Forward have gone above and beyond helping those less fortunate develop better eating habits,” said Leslie H. Secrest, MD, president of TMAF, TMA’s philanthropic arm via release. “The program also helps those with better circumstances give hope and develop a deeper empathy toward the people they serve.
“We are very pleased to reward the efforts Elizabeth Dry and Promise of Peace Gardens are making throughout the Dallas area.”
Soup It Forward will receive $5,000 to enhance the program along with the award.
