My day was going pretty well up until three minutes ago.
I made scrambled eggs for breakfast and shared them with my dogs. I wore my vintage Ralph Lauren Hawaiian shirt to work. I went for lunch at Señor Bean with my colleagues. (An understated downtown lunch spot. Get the fajitas.) And then, I had a meeting, wherein a room full of writers discussed DART and chocolate and head lice. Not an extraordinary day. But a fine one. Well, three minutes ago, things took a turn. A big, fat, cringe-worthy turn. I clicked on this story. I should not have clicked on this story.
According to GuideLive, Cheba Hut Toasted Sub, a “marijuana-themed” restaurant is maybe, possibly coming to Dallas. “Stoners are the target audience” and “drinks are called ‘cottonmouth cures,’ chips are ‘munchies.’” And “the sandwiches have names like Chronic, Dank and The Kind.” But it doesn’t have a lease, it sort of has expansion interest from the owners, and I’m not sure why it warranted a whole story in The Dallas Morning News when there actually isn’t much news here. (And now it’s getting a story here, so I guess maybe they’re onto something.)
But a restaurant, which caters to “stoners” with over-the-top sandwiches and Rice Krispie bars is tacky. You don’t have to smoke pot to dig roasted turkey breast and provolone cheese. And not all people who smoke weed are into junk food. We should be past this. By 2018, 66 percent of U.S residents favored marijuana legalization. And marijuana is now legal for medicinal use, and/or fully legalized in more than 30 states. This concept is tacky, outdated, and plays on a stereotype that is quite frankly, lame.
Think I’ll puff, puff pass.
