It’s Hatch Chile Season. Here’s How to Celebrate.

Get your hatch on.

Hatch chile madness started this week, an almost month-long extravaganza in the month of August that highlights the New Mexico chile that makes its home in the Hatch valley.

You know the drill: various restaurants and bars run specials. The smell of roasting batches of the green chiles wafts outside Central Market. Hands down, of course, the latter establishment gets wildest with its Hatch mania—they are dubbing their hatch-centric event, which runs August 7 through 20, Hatchsteria (hatch + hysteria, in case you read it first as though it rhymed with taqueria).

And while we all know about the hatch chile burgers and hatch chile and cheese biscuits, you might, like me, be in danger of veering into hatch fatigue. So, you’ve had hatch chile bacon poppers and hatch chile tamales. Now go try these: hatch gelato, hatch kombucha, and hatch beer.

Specifically (and this is from the Central Market release): Teo Premium Hatch Gelato (exclusive to Central Market), Buddha’s Brew Hatch Chile Prickly Pear Kombucha Growler (Austin local), Nine Band Brewing Hatch Me If You Can Kolsch-style ale brewed with Hatch green chiles (they recommend pairing with tacos).
