If you’re the kind of person who needs a pseudo-holiday as an excuse to indulge in the pure ecstasy of a good doughnut, you’re in luck, for June 7 is National Doughnut Day. Every year, we try to keep you up to date on the most exciting happenings in the world of doughnuts in North Texas. And so, without further ado, we bring you five of the most creative doughnuts in the area. Eat responsibly. Or don’t.

Maple bacon doughnut from Dough Boy Donuts (Fort Worth)
The whole “maple-bacon” combo thing may feel a little overdone at this point. But trust me, when I say that Dough Boy elevates this flavor profile. Their maple frosting is deep and true, without being cloyingly sweet. Their perfectly crispy bacon is sweetened in a sriracha-sugar glaze and dipped in chocolate. All of this sits on their slightly oversized, pillow-soft doughnuts.

Mochi doughnuts from Fat Straws (multiple locations)
Mochi adds a chewiness to the texture of these doughnuts that sets them apart from any others you’ll find around town. But it’s a nice departure from tradition as they still manage to taste light, airy, and soft. Mochi doughnuts come in a variety of flavors, and again, they’re expanding beyond your typical offerings. You’ll find fruit flavors such as strawberry, lemon, and blueberry, and even more intriguing Japanese flavors such a matcha green tea and black sesame. You’re going to want to try them all.

Taro and coconut doughnut from Detour Doughnuts (Frisco)
The team at Detour are, without a doubt, cranking out some of the most intriguing flavor combinations in the entire area. Which is why the line for doughnuts, especially on the weekend, continue to grow and will occasionally expand out the door. Their menu changes seasonally, but their current lineup boasts a fantastic doughnut with taro (purple yam) frosting, a light taro cream center, finished with coconut shavings. The execution is flawless and balanced. Whatever detour (see what I did there?) you need to take from your regular morning routine, this little donut shop will be worth your effort.

Croissant donut from Earnest Donuts (Lewisville)
While the croissant doughnut concept (the cronut) originated in New York City with Dominque Ansel, they quickly disseminated across the country. But I assure you, Earnest Donuts does the best version in DFW. They come in both glazed and cinnamon-sugar and you’re going to want to try one of each. They come out thick, flaky, and multi-layered, with a chewy interior that avoids being overly greasy.

Funnel cake donut from Jarams Donuts (North Dallas and Lakewood)
Funnel cakes doughnuts are composed of multiple smaller pieces of dough that are formed into rings that stick together and come out golden and crispy when fried. Fans of fair food (which is basically all of us) will revel in its greasy glory. Jarams does a few variations, including one crowned with copious amounts of cookie butter and a strawberry-Nutella flavor. But their crowning achievement is the autumn spice funnel cake doughnut, which, fortunately for us, can be found year round.
