Review: BackYard Beach Bar

When the place caught fire last June and shut down, we despaired. Turns out, we had bigger reasons to worry.

It used to be called the White Rock Yacht Club, and my family loved it. After work, on a hot Friday evening, we’d sit on the back patio, under a willow tree, and watch the kids swim while we drank Shiners and waited for our burgers to arrive. When the place caught fire last June and shut down, we despaired. But our spirits soared once we saw workmen fixing up the joint, and we returned in March for the grand opening of the renamed BackYard Beach Bar.
The first sign of trouble: valet parking. Out back, there was our beloved swimming pool, but it was filled only with two feet of filthy rainwater. We were told that once the pool was up and running, it would be 18 and up only. Then came the menu. It now features filet medallions for $19 and chicken ajilimojili for $14. I’m happy to sit on plastic furniture and be waited on by tattooed trollops in tight halter tops. (I prefer it that way, in fact.) But not at these prices. If I’m going to pay that much for dinner, I want a happy ending. And ours wasn’t. We went with bowtie pasta and shrimp in vodka sauce, which was bland, and the “Damn Good Burger,” which had an overly high opinion of itself. The whole experience left me as limp as the fries that came with the burger.
