Review: Urbano Restaurant & Paninoteca

|

We have one word to describe a recent dinner at this McKinney Avenue restaurant: delightful. It was one of those rare cool Dallas evenings, so a table on the patio was just the ticket. Unfortunately, we weren’t the only ones with this idea. But even though the patio staff was slammed, they were good-natured and accommodating—like suggesting a Nepenthe Sauvignon Blanc from Australia when the Matua from New Zealand was sold out.

Swordfish steak was moist and plump, hardly the dried-out slab it so often is, served with a wonderfully fresh and crisp cucumber relish with ribbons of fresh basil and a side of cheesy risotto that had a slight, yummy chew. Risotto also played a super supporting role with heartily seasoned grilled shrimp, sweet sun-dried tomatoes, and just-wilted spinach. Our only complaint was we couldn’t sop up the broth from an appetizer of steamed mussels with the wimpy complimentary bread.

Urbano owners Kristen and Mitch Kauffman recently approached local favorite Good Records with a great idea: Rock ’n’ Roll Wine Dinners. For about $30, music fans get a three-course meal—think wild mushroom risotto and grilled New Zealand lamb chops paired with wine—and a chance to sample songs from an upcoming album. (Track lists are printed on the two-sided menu so folks can get a taste of the tunes and the treats.) With ideas this cool, we officially love Urbano for more than those famous paninis and matchstick fries.
