Back in 2008, D Home covered the extensive restoration of one of Dallas’ most illustrious homes. The then-owners, Mark and Kelly Bunting, had just completed a massive, monumental task: modernizing a nearly century old home without compromising its history. And with a distinguished original design by Dallas’ beloved Hal Thomson (if you’ve ever driven down Swiss Avenue, you’ve seen his work), the home’s restoration and modernization was a feat that required careful attention to the architect’s always-sophisticated details.

It’s certainly worth the read, particularly if you have any desire to build a pool, but here, we’re just going to express our gratitude to the Buntings of the world, who preserve history, but — in their words — “jazz up the house” as well. What jazziness was added, you may wonder? Let’s go back to that pool.

The Bunting’s most ambitious undertaking was a full excavation of the backyard. The result: a 3,500-square-foot tiered outdoor living area. A sunken patio includes a great room, a bar, a guest area, a home theater, and a gym, while the pool is located on the first-floor level above. They also opened up the downstairs area, raised the roof, widened the patio, and enlisted interior designer Myrl Talkington, who was inspired by visiting Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.
