Food Feedback Friday: Burgers and Tapas Edition

Have you been to Shake Shack? We have.

Dallas is saturated with burgers. I finally made it to Shake Shack for my first experience. We arrived at 11:45 AM  and there were about 25 people in line. It moved pretty fast. We placed our order after waiting about 15 minutes. Seating wasn’t a problem. We could have sat inside, but my younger office mates wanted to sit out in the little park area in front of the restaurant.

Four of them ordered the standard cheese burgers. Two of us tried the The Link: a cheeseburger topped with griddled slices of jalapeno and cheese sausage from Pecan Lodge. All were slathered with Shake Sauce, a tartar-sauce-thousand-island mayonnaise concoction. The burgers are good. I felt like the sausage overpowered the meat in The Link. Overall, I didn’t feel like Shake Shack elevated our burger scene. The custardy shakes are nice on a humid September afternoon. The crinkle-cut fries are not worth one calorie. I’ve been once. I have no reason to return.

Loyal reader Greg Brown writes he has plenty of reasons to return for Turkish tapas Pera Henderson. “With a table of 5 we ordered about 75% of the menu. Every dish perfectly executed. Textures, tastes and flavors were quite unique–not just rehashed Greek food. Nice cocktail and wine list, too. Service was excellent. Give it a try!” I agree with his remarks. I eat at their North Dallas location at least once a week.

D Magazine’s executive editor, Kathy Wise, weighed in. She visited Barley & Board in Denton for the first time and she agrees with Catherine Downes that this place serves the “best burger in North Texas.” She and our web director Jason Heid argued over the shoestring fries. She writes: “they quickly turned cold and were too hard to pick up with my greasy fingers.”

Aardvark writes “I went to Olive Burger in Plano. It was good. Now please tell me where the photo of the delicious looking burger above was taken.” He/she was referring to the hero image of Luscher’s Uncle Herky in last week’s post.
