Some Housekeeping — Yes, We Do Dirty Laundry

Schutze and I, together again, in podcast form, coming soon!

A few things of note in the area education realm and in the world of Learning Curve:

1. After Friday’s meeting, the DISD board said it would meet this evening try to finally figure out how it’s going to name the home rule commission. (Bill Zeeble has a recap of last Friday’s meeting here; personal question for Bill: Where is Tim Rogers’ hat?)  Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. Looks like it will be scheduled next week.

2. The board is meeting Thursday at 3 p.m. with the Dallas City Council’s education task force at City Hall. According to the agenda, they will “discuss the roles of and collaborative efforts by/between the City of Dallas and the  Dallas Independent School District to assist with student achievement.” Should be good for live-tweeting. Set your schedules accordingly.

3. We’re working on having a sponsor banner/label on the site soon. A few people on Twitter asked who it is — the sponsor for Learning Curve is The Ashford Group of Companies, the grand poobahs of which believe that more education discussion is better for Dallas. They have the enlightened view that many companies have, which is that we must talk about and fix public education if we’re going to keep the city strong. But they have the VERY rare understanding that the only way it can be taken seriously is if it’s 100 percent editorially independent. I know because I solicited the money needed to start this, and while many were willing to give something, none were willing to do so when I said “You’ll have zero control over edit.” I did this partly so I could work out of my house, but mostly because I’m anxious to see if a Wonkblog/538.com/Andrew Sullivan model of site can work on a local level, in a very narrow vertical. We’ll see. Oh, and who has final say over the copy? D/Wick and Christine Allison, of course, just as they do for every site on Dmagazine.com. So what are the odds I write something bad about Highland Park schools? SLIM TO NONE, BABY!

4. I’m doing a podcast with Schutze tomorrow about education stuff. Should have it up in the afternoon.
