At Home with Tracy Martin Taylor: Pleasing Powder Rooms

It's time to love your loo.

Tracy Martin Taylor, the decor maven behind Eleven 11 Design, wants to help you beautify your home in 2014. Once a month she’ll be stopping by the D Home world headquarters to share a little interior design insight with us.

Of all the projects we do, I admit I have a guilty fave. I love the challenge of adding glamour to a living or dining room, making the master feel grand yet cozy, or elevating a kitchen to feel celebrity chef worthy, but there’s one tiny space that I consider the most fun. The powder room.

Here’s why:

1. There are no rules. The powder room doesn’t flow into other spaces so it can be like stepping into another world.

2. Some of the spacial do’s and don’ts that you may avoid elsewhere don’t apply. I mean, who cares if the room feels small or the ceiling feels low? It’s an experience!

3. It’s small so you can splurge on materials like wallpaper or that marble you wish you could afford to put in your master bath.

4. EVERYONE that enters your house will likely see it. It’s your show piece, your “Groove en rouge”!

A fabulous wallpaper is the easiest way to make an impact and add some of your fearless personality to a space. For example, the Osborne & Little Penguin Library wallpaper is going up in the powder room of our stylish bookworm couple with two adorable young boys. It’s whimsical, the kids love the color and it’s stunning with a high gloss navy ceiling (Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy to be specific).

For our journalist duo, their powder room is being overrun in Weitzner’s Newsworthy, for obvious reasons. It’s handmade and the texture is fantastic.

Some options to consider for your home include the French-inspired Folie Versailles Grand wallpaper — hanging this in an otherwise modern home is stunning. The Fornasetti II Collection patterns have a huge wow-factor. I also adore the architectural perfection of Procuratie and the whimsy of the Multiplette. Who wouldn’t want a colorful bicycle built for nine in the loo?

Moral of the story: don’t hold back. Change your powder from a boring place to freshen up to “Puff the Magic Drag-Room”! (Too much?!)

Love your space,

TMT
