BELLES OF THE BALLS

|

NANCY BRINKER is one of those individuals who defiesMurphy’s Law: If there’s a way to make things go right, she’llfind it. She’s worked magic for projects benefiting the arts, thecity and medical research -especially breast cancer, whichclaimed the life of her sister three years ago. An avowedhorsewoman and polo player, Nancy’s secret of success islaughter and low-pressure motivation.

ANNETTE STRAUSS is somewhat atypical of the archetypal charity volunteer, most of whom find the rigors of home and charity work sufficiently challenging. Annette adds a career -public relations for Bozell & Jacobs -and politics – she is currently running for an at-large City Council seat. But her fingers remain very much in the fund-raising pie: She has raised more than $8 million for the arts and medical research.

PEGGY SEWELL (left) and JANIE MCGARR are relative newcomers to the charity ball scene. Janie, who is Annette Strauss’ daughter, appears to be following in her mother’s well-heeled footsteps. Peggy, who came to Dallas from New Orleans via SMU, is also on the rise in the volunteer ranks. The two have concocted a veritable feast of Texana for the Cattle Baron’s Ball, and in the process, have assured themselves a slot in the charity circuit’s Who’s Who.

DORIS DIXON stepped into the limelight in 1978 when she chaired the Dallas Civic Opera Mask Ball -a fete sparked by well-festooned mystery and the magic of the Hyatt Regency’s opening night. From there it was success upon success -the Neiman-Marcus Far East Fortnight Ball and Mayor’s International Ball. Doris sees challenges ahead in winning support for the myriad competing events in town.
