Goodbye, winter.

You have plenty of options for your first day of spring. First, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra begins its weekend concerts at the Meyerson Symphony Center. The program is centered around Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2, a work that came out of totally debilitating depression and self-doubt. Fans of David Lean’s Brief Encounter, the restrained story of a sudden, passionate love affair between two ostensibly ordinary, sensibly married people, will recognize this as the heart-pounding score that swelled over Laura and Alec’s stolen moments. Jaap van Zweden conducts, while 23-year-old pianist Anna Fedorova performs the concerto. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Five Fragments and Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3 rounds out the evening. And now I just want to watch Brief Encounter with a Scandal-sized glass of wine.

In a venue that might as well be on the opposite pole, the rapper Le1f alights for another of those Redbull Sound Select shows. It’s just $3 with RSVP, so the Double Wide should be sufficiently packed. Dark Rooms and Vulgar Fashion are also on the bill. This show comes highly recommended from FrontRow’s Christopher Mosley.

Finally, Dallas Summer Musicals has Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, revamped for the stage. Follow the yellow brick road to Fair Park tonight.
