Brite Divinity School Steps Up For Level-Headed, Sane Christians, Calls Commenters Out For ‘Cruel’ Statements About Newtown

|

In what is increasingly becoming the norm – thankfully – sanity has begun to dominate the discussion regarding the Newtown shootings, and their relations to Christianity, faith, and the idea of God in the classroom. First there was the PTA mom who called out Mike Huckabee, now there’s the faculty of Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth:

They have responded to the massacre in Newtown by berating the nation for what they claim are its sins and failings: the lack of prayer in public schools, abortion, the teaching of evolution, the redefinition of marriage.   What happened on that day in Newtown was a natural consequence of these “sins”–or so these pundits say.  The common impulse in this response to the death of twenty-eight human beings in Newtown is to vilify others for what they perceive as God’s abandonment of America.  Their God “allowed” this “judgment.”  We denounce this view of God as erroneous and its proclamation as cruel.

Amen.
