All this is bad news for the Press Club and every media outlet in the region that put in money and time on Katie entries for 2006 and probably 2005 and who knows how far back. Who’s responsible? Investigations, possibly legal actions, will likely tell. Will the Press Club survive? Hard to say. Much to be discussed, including the entire point of a press club and the media obsession with awards. A media-watching FBvian, following the posts here yesterday and today, sends this observation re comments by an embattled club president Tom Stewart:
Please advise Mr. Stewart that it’s not a question of one profession being more “ethical” than another. The present and past board members (whether they be journalists or flaks) allowed this situation to develop. It didn’t happen over night. Whenever a group hands over the reins of an organization to one person, they are as guilty as the one in charge.Mr. Stewart complains about people on the sidelines taking potshots at the PC. Perhaps he should review the number of people who have been members of the club, seen the problems and resigned in frustration because of the “PC oldtimers” didn’t want change.The big question arising from all of this is “Why does Dallas need a Press Club?” The anwer is “No Press Club is better than one with questionable ethics.”
