HALLELUJAH!

The U. S. Bishops yesterday voted to revise the pedestrian, awkward, and theologically questionable English translation of the Mass that has been in effect since Vatican II to reflect the beauty and cadence of the Latin. Asked by a parishioner years ago what he missed most about the Episcopal Church, which he had left for the Catholic, Fr. George Rutler replied, “Saying the Mass in English.” A good joke–but a telling one. The Anglican translation is majestic and moving. The Spanish translation is almost as good. Now American Catholics will once again be connected to the literary beauty of the ancient liturgy.
