Let’s Talk Kitchens and Bath

These rooms are all about getting down to business, but it doesn't mean you can't make them beautiful.

Why we love it: Even though we visited this Fort Worth residence more than a year ago, it’s hardly old news—and not only because NBC-Channel 5 anchorwoman Jane McGarry lives there. She teamed up with designer Ken Blasingame to create a place bursting with color and foreign flavor, and the kitchen is no exception. Vibrant turquoise tile from Ann Sacks pops next to pale yellow cabinets. The carved wood deer head from India oversees all food prep.

Why we love it: When we asked Lisa Martensen to name a few of her obsessions, she listed Indian miniatures, neoclassical creamware, Wedgwood basalt, and all things plaster. (The list actually went on, but we got a cramp and had to stop writing.) So we’re not kidding when we say that every nook in her house contained a surprise. Her elegant master bath was all understated elegance: Duravit tub, sconces by Eric Cohler, and a Saarinen stool. It’s just a cool space, and we’re so sad that she doesn’t live there anymore.

Why we love it: No offending plastic shower curtains or crocheted toilet seat covers here. This  W.C. is all about refinement. Regan Carlile has created a space that makes bath time more blissful for daughter Virginia. Elegant details include a Kartell stool and an 18th-century French vanity that Regan found at Jacqueline Adams  Antiques in Atlanta. The painting is by Virginia’s great-grandmother.
