Let’s Look at a Photo of Some Money

The downside of a graphics intensive website.

MONEY!
MONEY!

The Morning News has a new website, still in beta form, that demands every story come with a screen-filling image at the top. Oftentimes, this is not really a problem. A photographer was on the scene or there is a great (or at least adequate) file photo. And then there is a story about a fleeing DWI suspect found with $20,000 in cash in his sock. So for that, here is a stock image of a bunch of $100 bills, I guess? At least it’s better than that dice game gone awry.

Personally, I would have shown either a pile of socks or tried to recreate the image by meticulously cutting up enough paper to accurately represent $20,000 in cash, then — even though it wouldn’t show — drawing and coloring both sides of each “bill” to look as close to the real thing as possible, then finding a co-worker of the right race (and age — that’s important), then having that person run for, oh, let’s say a mile to mimic the conditions on that night — actually, hold on. I would first have the co-worker drink five Bud Lights then run for a mile, then I would take a photo of him with his pants leg pulled up so everyone can see the bulge of $20K in his sock.

That’s just me, though.
