Due to the currently frozen and slushy landscape that is Dallas, Liz is trapped in her Oak Cliff apartment without access via her computer to the World Wide Web. Thanks to her smartphone, however, she was able to email me her recommendations for this weekend. (That’s assuming any of you plan on trekking outside your homes at all, given that it’s not expected to thaw out for a few days. FrontRow has some artsy suggestions for those planning to remain indoors.)
First off, we’ve got a slew of weather-related cancellations. The AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Holiday Festival, “Reliant Lights Your Holidays,” has been moved to next week. The Children’s Medical Center annual holiday parade on Saturday isn’t happening. The Dallas Museum of Art is closed today. And, really, if you have tickets to any show at any theater or venue in town, it’s probably best to call ahead before heading out.
Friday
We have heard from Dallas Theater Center that, as of right now, performances of A Christmas Carol tonight and this weekend are all still happening. (UPDATE, 4:30 p.m.: tonight’s performance of Christmas Carol has been canceled.) As is the Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar concert at the American Airlines Center (as of yesterday there were still plenty of tickets available for the, according to Liz, “performance art piece masquerading as a rap concert.”) Jingle Bells on Bishop also has not yet deemed the weather frightful enough to warrant calling the party off, tonight or tomorrow evening.
Saturday
In the afternoon, there’s a benefit reading of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart at Theatre Three. Proceeds go to AIDS Arms. There’s also the Parade of Flesh Holiday Benefit Show at Club Dada Saturday night, with some of Dallas’ most celebrated local acts, such as Vulgar Fashion, Pinkish Black, and Nervous Curtains. Proceeds there go toward holiday meals for needy families. Paul Varghese also has a comedy set worth checking out at the Kessler.
Sunday
There’s the Dallas Marathon to watch (downtown is a good spot for spectators because it starts and ends there) and the Christmas Celebration at the Meyerson. It’s a family-friendly concert of holiday classics and a Santa appearance. (UPDATE: Dallas Marathon has been canceled.)
