Housed in a former garage along Henderson Avenue (walls of window, fresh white paint, and a bright orange door have transformed the exterior), Tate Studio is part design office and part pop-up. In way, it’s the physical embodiment of owner Rachel Buxkamper’s resume, which includes 20 years in merchandising at Neiman Marcus, a national sales manager role with Jan Showers, and the director of development for local nonprofit Dwell with Dignity.

“I connected with [Dwell with Dignity founder] Lisa Robinson because I just loved her mission. I was like, oh my gosh, how can I help you?” says Buxkamper. “I have always believed that your surroundings make a big difference in how you feel and where you think you’re going in life.”

In 2017, she launched her own design studio, and found a home for it in the former Art is Art consignment shop along Henderson in November of 2018. The second floor is dedicated office space, with loads of samples and very colorful powder bathroom, while the ground floor serves as an artist-filled pop-up. “I didn’t want to be a shop girl again, and I love original art. I had learned so much from my time with Dwell with Dignity,” says Buxkamper. “Every 60 days we pick a new theme, and new artists and artisans, and totally change the whole store.”

The current theme, “French Riviera,” features a slew of female creatives, including Carolyn Joe and Sonya Edwards, filling Tate’s first floor with beachy hues and an striped umbrella or two. Shop the space (and enjoy Buxkamper’s little escape) through August 18.
