Review: Popolos

This comfortable dining room, entering its 12th year in Preston Royal Shopping Center, has aged gracefully. While the protein-plus-potatoes menu isn’t cutting-edge, it’s certainly Dallas-friendly. Veal Milanese, roasted salmon, and veal piccata are the top sellers, but I prefer to slip in and eat at the always-crowded bar. There, surrounded by my mid-50s peers, I enjoy a thin-crust pizza baked in the kitchen’s brick oven. There is always live music—piano on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and a jazz trio on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The wine list is stocked with familiar Chardonnays, Cabernets, and Merlots, but there is also a nice selection of Italian wines, including a Brolio Chianti Classico, which paired well with a pizza of Italian sausage, portabello mushroom, asparagus, and fontina cheese. Popolos, owned by Stephen Hammond (who operates Park Cities Prime), also offers pick-up, home delivery service, and Atkins- and South Beach Diet-friendly dishes.
