Buy Her Bordeaux

In celebration of women everywhere, each of these wines are produced by women.
|

Your mom carried you for nine months and went through a painful delivery to bring you into this world. The very least you can do is bring her a bottle or two of good wine on Mother’s Day. Sure she likes her Kendall Jackson, but surprise her with these earthy reds from the Bordeaux region in France—the birthplace of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. And in celebration of women everywhere, each of the following wines are produced by women. A few are winemakers and a few run the show as owner and proprietor—all of their wines reflect the casual elegance and finesse of motherhood.

2004 Chateau La Freynelle Blanc, Daignac ($11.99)
This is a fresh easy to drink white wine with a hint of fruity sweetness. Owner Veronique Barthe handles everything from the vine to glass. Barthe’s family has owned the winery for seven generations. She is the first woman to have inherited the vineyard.
Available at Farpointe Cellars, 1125 Legacy, Ste. 100, Frisco 214-618-9882

2004 Chateau Fonbadet, Pauillac ($26.99)
Talk about bang for your buck. This is a full-bodied Bordeaux blend that is layered with flavors of black currants and spice. Owner and winemaker Pascale Peyronie took over the family business in 2002 and she remains one of the few female producers in the famous Pauillac region. Neighbors include Chateau Latour, Pichon Lalande, and Mouton.
Available at Majestic Fine Wine and Spirits, 7560 Greenville Ave. 214-363-0201

2003 Chateau La Fleur, Saint-Emilion ($34.99)
Laurence Brun is director of this Grand Cru winery and along with the world-renowned winemaker Michel Rolland produces a powerful, rich wine with a graceful tannic structure. Like mom, this wine is a classic and will age beautifully.
Available at Farpointe Cellars, 1125 Legacy, Ste. 100, Frisco 214-618-9882

2003 Chateau Mongravey, Margaux ($34.99)
Karin Berneleau and her husband Regis love their wine. She believes every glass of wine you drink should give you pleasure and she works hard to ensure you will enjoy every drop. Expect a big, bold wine laced with fruity goodness and a unique earthy finish.
Available at Farpointe Cellars, 1125 Legacy, Ste. 100, Frisco 214-618-9882
