The players rank 30 of our best and worst private golf courses.

IF THERE’S ANYTHING GOLFERS LIKE MORE THAN PLAYING GOLF, it’s talking about great golfers or great golf courses. How many times have you heard it? At some corner table in the 19tb hole you and your regular golf group are discussing the day’s conditions, your play, or who was “lucky” enough to win all the bets. Talk moves in the direction of other great courses-the aura, the challenge, the setting, or the condition of this or that course. The question moves around the table: Who has played the most courses in the Top 100? Then the discussion digresses like this:

“Okay, okay, but what’s the best course in the whole country?”

“Pine Valley.”

“Winged Foot.”

“Pebble Beach.”

Some of our experts added comments on certain courses. A sampler:

Northwood: “Generally overrated-great trouble with greens over the last several years and is just now getting in good condition.”

Brook Hollow: “A. great traditional course designed by A.W. Tillinghast. The recent face lift is a great improvement. The location is the only negative.”

Brookhaven: “It. simply has too much play and is in ragged condition. The design is boring.”

Mira Vista: “Since June of 1994, when the state amateur competition was held here, the condition or the course has gone downhill.”

Bent Tree: “I am not a fan of courses in housing developments, but Bent Tree would be tops in that category.”

Lakewood: “An older club with a classic look.”

Oak Cliff: ’’An older club that at times has trouble with conditioning. Not very long, but some good holes on this course.’’

Preston Trail: “Far and away the best course in Dallas and Fort Worth, Politics have kept it from being one of the top 100 courses in the world.”

Stonebriar: “A terrible course. The greens are like putting on elephant graves. There’s too much water and the greens are too difficult for the average player to enjoy his playing experience.”

Colonial: “Easy course to shoot 72. but difficult to shoot under 70. Greens suffer terribly during the summer because of high traffic, small greens that were built in the Trinity River bottom with large trees resulting in very little air circulation and intense heat.”

Gleneagles: “A fun course to play if you’re playing well. Gotta watch out for the water!”

Dallas Country Club: “Poor practice facility, good greens. It’s an easy course, but eight through 13 are challenging holes.”

Dallas Athletic Club: ” Demands a nice variety of shot-making skills. As the courses continue to mature, so will the aesthetics. I think #5 and #11 are two of the most memorable holes in the area. The overall design is excellent: however, the severe mounding on some of the greens limits pin placement and creates course drainage problems.”

The Shores: “It’s more like a high-end municipal course.”

Las Colinas Country Club: “Offers a variety of uphill, downhill, and side-hill lies that you typically see in the Northeast but rarely in our area. The golfer enjoys a wide variety of elevation changes and interesting views of Dallas.”
